Kindness Network hosted a "Meeting with the Mayor" event to connect community members with the City of lrvine.

On September 11, 2026, Kindness Network (KN) hosted Irvine Mayor Larry Agran and Sustainability Commissioner Scotty Hong for a community gathering at the South Coast Chinese Cultural Center. Approximately 60 attendees, including representatives from KN partner organizations, joined the event to hear from city leaders and discuss Irvine’s present priorities and future development, with particular attention to building a greener, healthier, and more connected community.

In his opening remarks, KN President Steven Chen reflected on his involvement more than two decades ago in the advocacy efforts led by Agran that contributed to the creation of the Great Park. Chen drew a parallel between that earlier civic effort and the community collaboration that eventually gave rise to Kindness Network, particularly around public health, mental wellness, and stronger partnerships between residents, community organizations, and the city.

Mayor Agran reiterated his vision of Irvine as one of the “safest, most educated, greenest, healthiest, and kindest” cities in America. He also discussed the city’s Office of Health and Wellness, established during the COVID-19 pandemic, and indicated that its role could potentially expand to encompass areas such as housing and public benefits.

Commissioner Hong spoke personally about mental wellness, recalling challenges he experienced during his years at Harvard. He delivered part of his remarks in Mandarin, emphasizing the importance of awareness, attentive listening, and recognizing the mental health needs of those around us. His remarks were warmly received by the audience. Mayor Agran and Commissioner Hong also took questions from attendees on topics including mental health resources, the role of the business community and Chamber of Commerce, and opportunities for youth leadership and civic participation.

Coinciding with the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks, Chen also highlighted the importance of supporting the mental and physical well-being of first responders. He noted that the concept behind Kindness Network took shape during the pandemic, when the need for stronger connections among public institutions, community organizations, and residents became especially apparent.

The gathering reflected KN’s continuing effort to bring civic leaders and community members together around shared concerns for health, well-being, participation, and a stronger local community.
